London-based singer, songwriter and voice for hire, MPHO (or Mpho Skeef as she’s known in some circles) is rapidly making a name for herself as a solo artist the other pop stars best be watching. Her debut is the model of a hyped release, and we managed to secure a chat with her prior to its launch. Look up one of her videos and you’ll understand why her name is on so many tongues.

This time last year no one other than their moms, girlfriends and long-suffering housemates had heard of the self-ordained founders of ‘thrash folk’, SHORTSTRAW. Now they’ve played Oppi, self-released an EP and are gradually building a fiercely loyal fan base that extends well beyond the confines of those long-sufferers. CRAIG WILSON pinned them down for an Irish coffee and a chat about bum-like chins, strange weddings and expression-impaired movie stars.
